KAITLYN + JUSTIN ARE EXPECTING! A NARRAGANSETT BEACH MATERNITY
I still remember like it was only yesterday, when a colleague of mine at ESPN told me about a couple she knew from her hometown that were getting married. Rachel was among the handful of people I told about the brand spanking new business venture that I had started while I was on maternity leave with Julian. My plans for a wedding photography business started brewing around the time I planned our own wedding. That was the time when I desperately longed for my first DSLR–but I digress. Back to Rachel – she said she’d given her friend Kaitlyn my email and mentioned she’d contact me soon. I was excited, to say the least, because booking Kaitlyn would mean that she would be my second wedding the following year. One was better than none, and two was a dream for my budding business. Before leaving my edit room, Rachel said, “Oh you’ll love them, they are super pretty.”
Super Pretty? I did not know what that meant up until our first meeting, which was at their engagement session. Of course I had already Facebook stalked them soon after I got their correspondence–let’s face it, it would be weird if I didn’t! I was so nervous for their session because they had never met me before and we were scheduled to spend the next couple hours or so together. Nick was with me, ready to film them for our second-ever engagement interview. He looked at me squeezed my arm and said, “Relax” (my husband is the bestest). I took a deep breath, exhaled out the anxiety, flashed a smile, and yelled out, “Heeeeeey guys!” from across the street. Kaitlyn was leading the way towards us, as Justin trailed behind. They were headed towards the entrance of the Maritime Aquarium, where Nick and I stood. As they got closer, I noticed both of them wearing genuine smiles and so I thought, okay, yes, they are definitely “pretty.” Justin put his hand out for a shake, so Nick happily obliged, but with fluidity, their handshake ended with the hug-dap-thing that old bros do. So instead of a handshake Kaitlyn and I hugged – and there it was, ice–broken.
When I asked them to first stand where the light was gorgeous and told them to just hold each other, I knew that they would make it very easy for me, because besides being “pretty,” they were unmistakably in-love. After snapping the first few frames, I witnessed super pretty. But as Nick and I got to know them better, after hearing their love story, and just spending the few hours with them, we realize they were much more–they are super beautiful inside. My friends are super beautiful. So it made a lot of sense that we felt as though Kaitlyn and Justin were a couple of our old friends. On their big day it felt like we were witnessing and capturing the special moments of our friends’ wedding! It was also then that I noticed that Kaitlyn is very much into preserving memories. She keeps scrapbooks and journals and she cares a lot about moments, big and small. She frequently collects things from those special days and turn those things into keepsakes. She is my kind of girl! So when I asked her to rock out her dress again for a “trash the dress” session a couple months after their wedding, I suggested she bring something special from her wedding with her.
Imagine my giddiness when she texted me about her brilliant work of recording Justin’s reaction when he found the positive pregnancy test! They went on and recorded every reaction of their family and close friends as they shared their amazing news on Facetime! I was literally in tears when I watched Kaitlyn’s video of Justin for the first time. It was also pretty surreal going back to Waveny Park to film their pregnancy announcement because they sat in the same bench they sat in a couple years prior, where we recorded their engagement interview.
This summer Nick, Julian, and I went up to Narragansett beach in Rhode Island to photograph her growing baby bump! On the way there, I picked up a gorgeous floral crown from Hana Floral Design in Mystic. As Julian and Nick played in the sand that early Saturday morning, I photographed Kaitlyn and Justin once more. We reminisced about the times we’ve spent and how so many things have happened in just two years. Then Justin asked, “So what’s next after this?” And in unison, Kaitlyn and I responded with, “Family pictures!”
I am absolutely in love with this session! Congratulations Kaitlyn and Justin! I am sooo happy and excited for you
two three! I can’t wait to meet baby Elijah!
